Vr6's also hold their own....ie faster than a fatty gti
Like everyone has said it all depends on how much you like the VR6 and how tempting a mk4 GTI is really...I bought my VR a bit blind and despite the fact it's given me a bit of crap I have (only just) stuck it through and I'm enjoying it now

Hi all,
Thanks for the replies.
I have to say that the VR6 is growing on me.
In terms of quality of construction, how do the MK4 Golfs compare to the MK3s?
At this stage, I have to say I am leaning towards looking out for a MK4.
Perhaps even diesel ...
I didnt mean mk4 diesel, I meant diesel in general.
BTW ... prices for a mk4 GTi are about 15K onwards at carsales ...
There are 2 in the classifieds on her for $10k. Check the whats on ebay section.

I'm going to cover my eyes and pretend I didn't read that!
Nah, I love and cherish my Mk4, hopefully it loves me back come resale time.
My $0.02 is that a Mk4 GTI is not a 'performance car' like a WRX or whatever until you spend $$$ on it. I view the car in the same vein as the 4mo' Bora or a six cylinder 3 series - a comfy cruiser with very good quality and a bit of poke when you need it.
A 'charged VR6 would have heaps more character than a Mk4 (and sound wicked to boot).
Hi there Messy
I am starting to share your sentiments about the VR6. However, I am afraid of the car turning into a money pit ... there was a similar thread here not too long ago.
Cheers
Maybe go for a cheap reliable car to get you through monday-friday and keep your VR off the road to let you work on it or build it up, whatever you prefer. I think that with a modded VR down the track you will be far more satisfied than driving a mk4 gti, which I hear are less reliable than other generations and the gti model especially is not up to the standards of other generations. I can only say anything from experience on the VR tho as I haven't driven a mk4 gti as yet.
I wouldn't say the MK4 GTI is unreliable - in fact I reckon it's probably better than the VR6. Timing belts and water pumps are an issue for the 20V motor, but we're all aware of that and stay on top of it. The first thing I did when I bought mine was have the T-belt, tensioner and pump changed. I don't expect any problems at all from it now!
I think the difference between the two is like Honda's 1999 DC2 Type R (=VR6) and 2007 DC5 Type S (MK4).
One has loads of character but will cost $$$ to keep going, and the other is a bit less focused but a better day-to-day car for it.
