I've been wanting a starter button setup for a long while! This looks really good. But... since I have a green thing going on with my car the button has to be green too. Having a hell of a time finding one!!

I was thinking about that, heaps of things utilize green to go buttons. There has got to be an electrical supplies place that sells something that would be suitable.

yeh this is sweet mate. Awesome idea. I still don't really understand how adding the button stops you from having too many keys though... is the problem turning the key or just starting it?

you could go even futher with that project like so:

    * replace chip reader with a more powerful one and move it to another location near the ashtray, centre console, globebox or even the door

    * remove the immobiliser chip from the key fob and put it in a smaller more compact keyring

    * When you want to start the car, chuck your keys (with the new small chip-keyring attatched) into the ashtray (or wherever you move the chip reader) and press the start button.

As for the key barrel and it's assorted positions (Off, ACC, On), you could have a set of three buttons that can only be on one at a time next to the start button.

you could go even FURTHER and hook up the alarm or even a TIMER to the three buttons so that the button switches to the 'off' position when the alarm locks or the timer runs out. Of course the timer wouldn't be on while the car is running - only when the engine is not running.

You can get one with a remote start alarm and full kit seem them before about the 500 buck mark but seem good that gets rid of a key somewhat

Nice work mate, I like what you've done!

I got sick of my button hanging down, dangling off a wire by the leg, so I decided to hide it and neaten it all up a bit. The button I had wouldnt fit inside one of the blank switches by the air con controls so next best thing was under the steeringwheel.

This is what was already there:

    And the button:

Then drilled a hole for the button through the plastic and foam behind the cover and put the button in (fitted so perfectly!):

    And the finished product:

(Sorry about the poor quality pics, phone camera was only thing around at the time!)

If doing this and pulling the cover off around the steering wheel, make sure you dont break the stupid holes that the screws that hold the 2 parts together, they have caused me soo much grief, having to make new holes and find extended screws to fit!

Nice work lorenz..yeah my clamshell is also pretty busted.

I think there is a little confusion.
The reason for the shot of my keys is an example of too heavy a set of keys. Thats why my ignition is not working so good. There is too much wear on the barrel. So, I still need a key to turn on the accessories and clear the immobilizer etc..but as bboy said if I wanted to get tricky it would be kinda easy to eliminate that too.

On another note, on ebay somewhere they actually sell shifter knobs with a pop up cover and button which can used for whatever? But an engine starter is certainly a possibility.

What kind of button is that? Does it have a special name? Electronics stores are going to be hella exacting about what i'll need.

Ok finding alot of green circular ones on the RS components website, but need to know what kind of amperage rating we're looking at here. Being a starter button I'm assuming something around 30A @ 12v?
