    engine rebuild

Ok guys i purchased a 2.8l 12v engine about 2 weeks ago off a guy who had it just sitting beside a garage, got it for $200 without the head as it didn't have one. Im tracking down a head as we speak so no dramas there. The engine is out of a 95 golf so it's obd1 with unsure km's on it. Im not sure what i really want to do with it as in building it up i.e. stock rebuild or go all out and work it, what do you guys think?

It really depends on what you're going to use it for. A stock rebuild using OEM parts plus chains will be fine if you just want a refreshed engine to last another 200,000km plus.

If you want forced induction power then rebuild normally but with ARP head studs, ARP rod bolts and a head gasket spacer to lower compression and you should be sweet for at least 400whp

I was at the same point with mine.
If something needed replacing, I looked for a upgrade while I was at it, otherwise didnt really worry

    Re: engine rebuild

Depends on a lot of things really, budget mainly. There is the potential to go all out and build a monstrous motor out of it, but the price for the minimal gains each little bit gives really adds up

Hey mate, ive got a obd1 12v head that you can buy if you want it? it has 130,000kms and is in good nick i dont have any use for it now as i have 2 spare heads for the racecar and only need one. $200 plus shipping and its yours

Like both of the guys above said its really dependant on what you want from the motor.. and also budget..

doing a little bit of work like cams little bit of porting and a tune is good but if you want to suck good power out of it the only real way is forced induction but it also comes at a cost! for FI id budget 15k for a decent build. by the time you rebuild a gearbox, lsd, stronger driveshafts, standalone management, forged internals, rebuilt/rebuild head and bottom end... big $$

A vr block without its head Hmmm
Before you start u should think why it doesnt have a head ?
Most likely something has happened to it, unless you were told why.
Which means the bottom block could have sustained some damage to.
If it was me, id hone the block and replace all the bottom end bolts and bearings.
If your a bit short on money, like others have said then a refresh with some added pepper to it is more preferred. Who wants a completely standard vr6 motor!
If your willing to spend around 6-10 grand, you could make a 2.9/3L or supercharge it.

Yep exactly what ill be doing.pretty much after I'm done with it it'll have all new bearings and everything else that will need replacing.the guy I bought it off didn't know much about it as it was his friends but I've checked most of the block out and looks fine, the chain and guides are even in good condition but they'll be getting replaced.will be boring the block out to 83mm for larger pistons!
