    Engine cutting out

Hi Guys. I was wondering if someone has an answer for a reccuring engine problem in my 1995 Golf 2lt Manual, Basically, as I drive along the engine will cut out.I hit the key again it starts and away we go. Its driving me nuts. I had it at a claimed Euro Car Garage, they had it all day, did supposed tests and said they could not find anything wrong with it. I asked if anything was recorded on the CU unit, they said No. Trouble is there is no indication when it going to stop on you. One garage said bring it back when the problem occurs. Thats great but when it is restarted it will go until it decides to stop again. Is it likley to be the CU unit. I know this model has querks that relate to the Oxygen sensor. A machanic I queried said it unlikely to be the fuel pump because they tend to just die on you. Anyone had similar probelms? Thanks George

Update your location so we can send you to someone in your area that knows what they're doing.

Things that I would look at, hall sender in the dissy, coil, ECU relay and Fuel pump relay and duff VW fuses. Replace any engine related ones with new shop bought ones.

    In no particular order.

The 2 relays often have dry joints in them that can be fixed with a soldering iron.

Coils usually quit all together, Hall senders breakdown with time and get more and more intermittent. $20 from Jaycar.

Doubt the ECU would have problems, a scan with VAG-COM is always the best place to start.

    And welcome to the forum!!

Does this happen when the car is hot??????? if yes then electrics perhaps and i would look at ECU power up relay numbered 30 on the relay, around position 3 or 4 on the top of the fusebox. Fuel pump relay bottom right corner of the fusebox and Gav is right coils are bad too. Common missed fault is fuel filter as well (blockage).
    Good luck

Thanks for all the help fellows. It pointed me in the right direction. The problem was the distributor cap, rotor button, leads and worst of all, the fuel filter. I might not have mentioned that I only recently bought the car and it only has 120000km on the clock. The guy I brought it from works in the office with me and has owned the car since new. Problem is he knows nothing about cars and who ever has been doing the servicing has let him down badly.

I dont believe the filter has been changed since new. I saw what came out of it when it was removed and it looked like mud. All fix now and working well. I will again renew the fuel filter in a few weeks until all the mess in the tank is filtered out. The injectors will no doubt be clogged but I will replace them shortly, just as soon as the fuel colour in the filter looks like petrol. Thanks again. George
