It's not usually the motor but the regulator mechanism which breaks down. If it's still working importing one from overseas can be an option, especially if you want to grab a few other parts while your there like oil filters and all the other parts which are stupidly expensive locally. German Auto Parts will serve all your needs.
If it's busted and you need the window fixed now, well then your left with local options. I sourced a new one round $220 or so through Golf Loon in Sydney (off the top of my head so don't quote me on price), although it may be worth checking out someone a little more local since it's a pretty big package which I'm sure is worth a few $$ to ship.
Unless your getting them really cheap I don't think it's worth going second hand since your just buying someone else's nearly broken part...
Sadly, as far as I know the plastic wheel that breaks down over time was replaced with a metal part in the Mk4, they just never retrofitted the part to the Mk3 so your still buying something that will break again one day...

no noise coming from windowmotor
Even so the best way to diagnose is to take it all apart and then test the motor itself. Even if it is just the motor you might as well buy a new regulator so you wont be doing it again for a while *fingers crossed*.
Adam from V A Garage tried to source electric motor for window only got quote gen vw $600 non gen regulator $220

will try IMPARTS in Brisbane for motor. didn't think it was worth using a second hand motor[Golf Loon] if prone to failure . rather buy new window motor and hope it lasts. or just replace both rear window regulators with manual ones
