    dyno'd my vr

    i put my 97 vr6 on the dyno at tafe today.

    was i wrong in being lead to believe that a stock vr should be making 98-100kW at the wheels?

    because i only got 90.4kW at the wheels. computer estimated thats 115.8kW at the crank.

    i was disappointed.

    There's a lot of factors that influence the readings you get out of a dyno.

    A std VR should output 174hp according to VW. I am not sure what that is in KW but I do know that 110KW is 150hp.

    Depending on how close my mental maths and your dyno are, you could be 10-12 hp short of a std output.

    That could be down to not having enough air in your tyres, crap fuel, a set of old spark plugs, a throttle that isn't opening all the way, blocked fuel filter, bad injector........

    Do you have diagnostic equipment at TAFE? Maybe you can get to work with that and check the ignition and fuelling systems.

    ya my teacher asked if ive had the injectors serviced/cleaned. ill probably change fuel filter and spark plugs when i get a chance. and ill be doing autotech 262 cams when i get the money. then get it dyno'd again and see how we go. might use some of that injector cleaner stuff too.....hmmm..

    i saw that video from vwvortex australia, where they had a dyno shootout and this first car was a stock vr, and it made 98kW. thats why it confused me thats all.

    Just too many unknown factors to predict whats up. I'd start by doing a good service on it. Injector cleaner may help but don't get cut up if that's not it.

    Scanning the ECU with VAG-COM would be worthwhile though. Maybe a duff sensor or MAF if your motor has one??

    keep in mind that some dynos read high and some read low.

    Also heat soak is a big killer on VR6s so if u were idling for a long time before hand that could explain a low reading perhaps? The ECU would pull some timing if the IATs were high.

    I reconmend probz not using injector cleaner as i have heard some very bad results from it... Also some dyno's may be slighty out...

    The Mk1 gave 2 different figures of 3 different dyno's... Also if there isnt a huge fan forcing air in that cant affect it

    hmmm...the car was hot, i'd just come back from lunch about half an hour beforehand...

    i know i deleted a temp sender fault a couple weeks ago that was sporadic from the last owner...ill check it again on monday.

    it was pulling a solid 90.4kW the first two runs we did, then the last one pulled like 87 or something, teacher said that would be the heat soak draining my life.

    oh well. looks like i got a few things i still gotta do to really get it to the level of running im looking for before modifying it!

    for the price of a new temp sensor at imparts or somewhere like that ud be crazy not to just replace it!

    nah its been replaced i think. the guy i brought it off was a customer at burwins and we replaced a bunch of stuff in the cooling system just before i brought it. ill have to check the paperwork whether or not we replaced any sensors or not.

    i was lookin at the sensors the other day when doing the chains and was a bit confused when the sensors looked a bit dirty and i'd thought they'd been changed. oh well ill check for faults monday and replace whatever sensors that have come back with faults again.

    then probably see how we go on the dyno when i go back to tafe again.

    oh btw does anyone know where to get an enclosure for my pod filter? maybe i should just make one. nvm.

    Stock is 128kW at the fly, so your figures are pretty good for a 10 year old car.
