did some more interneting/googling and less work on the car...
I came across this. maybe the source of my dodgy feeling clutch, apparnelty a problem when upgraded clutches are installed, and Tim pointed out this car already had a problem with the fork not long after the clutch was originally installed.

if that is the case, plan is to either buy or make this (pending on the cost of a stock unit...):


Will suss out if that is the problem when its all out, as Josh pointed out might be worth while strengthening it anyway!

also not sure if a mk3 thing or just my car in particular but the gear box feels very sloppy compared to my mk4, mk4 just goes where you want it to go, VR really needs some directing into the right position.
thats when I came across guys doing a mk4 0j2 shifter swap. These were the comments about it:

By swapping the shifterbox, cables, and shift tower(in the transmission) from a mk4 5spd car, shifts will be much smoother and precise. Putting the Mk4 shifter box in only requires that a few holes be drilled in the floor, and some extended studs bolted into the box. This is a great shifter, and oem upgrade

This is defiantly something that interests me, as I do enjoy the feel of the mk4 shift over a lot of other manual cars cars

I've only driven a VR once but compared to my bora the shift was not as nice so i believe that its pretty normal for a VR to feel like that, and i also LOVE the gearshift in my bora and i haven't found a car yet that has a nicer shift (not that I've driven THAT many cars)

not to worry Dylan changing gears on a VR is like rowing a boat, you can adjust the linkage for a better more direct feel but then that can only take things so far.

clutch forks even new from the stealer ship are less then $50 the last time i checked.

02j shifter tower conversion is the way to go if you want the VR to shift like a mk4

Spend the $ at Bakers and get the seals done now. Then do your chains and gaskets. And because you have it all in bits do rings. And bearings!

well not much, hence why i cut back on my shopping list.
if its must have and engine items that should be done while its out and apart ill borrow some money from the rents to do it, no point in doing stuff twice.

the bottom end on the VR is pretty bulletproof, so I dare say the bottom end wouldn't need doing for a long time. Where as the head gasket is more likely to die in the next 100k

Not perfect by anymeans, but they will do.

I noticed my original Vento seats have two leavers on the side, and off the top of my head the the VR only have one.
Whats the difference? Worth swapping the bases over?

Started poking around the Vento again.
pulled the dash, wipers, ECU, Cluster to start investigating the wiring.
The hands free setup and after market immobiliser, while looking professionally installed, have made a mess. Cant even work out whats doing what. Hopefully dont need to keep any of those bits and the VR wiring behind the dash is a bit more original.

It's always a laugh to find those sorts of surprises.

I had the radio and everything out of our old MK4 Golf once, and found a $5 note, and a whole heap of cards from a previous owner. Some included security clearance cards to a couple of Navy bases.

wow, NAVY cards are pretty impressive!
I have a swap card for something, but not sure what.
was so much rubbish in the car when I got it, owner clearly didnt intend of parting with it when he left it at the mechanics
