So because im a noob with motors rego and roady will be on hold. Pulling the head off again to confirm a mistake i may have made with the rebuild.
Will give me a chance to fix the coolant sensor housing leak (leaks ever so slightly on super cold winters nights) and rocker cover gasket at the same time (ecs sent me the wrong one, so need to replace with a different revision gasket)

Golf has been 95% stripped. Just waiting to organise scrap pickup when I'm home next.
Here's a reason I didn't feel bad about wrecking it

Pulled a heap of trim back off the interior to start playing with the wiring.
Now should have MFA display working again, and hopefully get some cruise control parts in tomorrow.
Then to sort the fuel pump (still currently hot wired)

Have something odd with the engine sounding like it's revving or working harder when the headlights come on. Only minor enough to notice it with the bonnet open and car stationary. Doesn't go away until the car is turned off either. Any ideas there from the electrical mk3 gods?

Could be a grounding issue? Drawing more current sucking sheit down.

Yeah maybe. We did do the sneaky headlight relay bypassed the fuse box (seems pretty standard on vortex) so I'll check the ground on that

My new seat guides, tensioner, aux belt and spark plug lead tool arrived thanks to Tim at dubaddiction.
Pulled the leads and plugs to start investigating the smoking on start up. Found the plugs covered in oil.
Thinking it is the valve steam seals (or lack there of... still don't recalled installing them after rebuild...) and being it wasn't Smokey before pulling the head off I'm thinking the piston rings shouldn't have changed in condition too much just sitting there.

It's only for the first couple of seconds on start up after the car has been sitting for extended periods from what I can tell, so assuming it's a very slow leak as I'm not chewing threw any measurable amount of oil.
Any other things I can try or look for before ordering parts I may not need?

New seat guides in on the drivers side. Wow! Seat moves so smoothly and no more rattles. Worth the couple of dollars for sure.
Started putting arch liners back in but think I need a few more screws.
Found the issue to with the fuel pump, incorrect connection behind the fuse box, Now just to figure out where it should be plugging in and what the other one is.
Found a bit more ghetto wiring from the aftermarket alarm while I was there so that can go and be re wrapped.

Once that's all sorted and tidied up battery will go back in and can try to nut out the excess smoke on start up.

Just went to swap the aux belt and tensioner. The old tensioner was ticking and the belt was down to 4 rows (rather then 6) I did order one when I had the motor apart but a non a/c version arrived by mistake,

Noticed the a/c pulley has a coil of wire wrapped up inside it. Anyone know if that is a foreign object or part of the a/c that has come apart.
Also the a/c pulley and one other pulley seem to have shallow grooves compared to the other 4. Is this how they are meant to be...?

A/c and water pump are basically flat (non grooved) on mine. So going to say normal.

Wire inside of pulley, surely foreign?
