    drivers lock barrel snapped.

    As rebecca_321 posted previously.

the lock barrel has snapped at the end (the hook) and dropped out, can anyone recommend where I can get either a replacement, better version (I read seat ones fit ?) in Melbourne ?

I also need to get another key cut as the car only came with one. Should I order the blank off ebay from hong kong and take it down to the local lock smith and get them to cut it ?

or can someone recommend a lock smith that has the keys in stock ?

it's the black handle key with the VW logo in the center and WTO stamped on the base of the metal key part.

    Thanks in advance.

    Michael.

Hmm I think if you can find a wrecker or something it's probably best to go grab the door locks from them. They will let them go for cheap, you just have to make sure they give you the keys if they have them!

As for new keys, it's probably easiest to order blanks from somewhere and get someone to cut them. Unless of course, you can order the lock barrels with a key already cut, like a set or something...that would be handy!

Import dealers sell an uprated version but it costs ~$80, so probably not worth it. Yes, Seat ones are not as prone to breaking, I remember hearing from Matt (PM "Golf Loon". He should have some for sale too). If you find intact second-hand ones, there's no need to use different keys, just realign the barrel to accept your current keys.

Do you know if your car has a factory immobiliser? If it does, it's not just a simple "get a blank key and cut it" affair as you'll need the immobiliser chip also. You'll have to get one programmed from VWA directly. I think a few people here have done it for around ~$90? You can go through eBay and buy a spare and have it cut by a locksmith, but that means you won't be able to start the car with it (only lock/unlock your doors).

    thanks guys.

I don't believe it's got a factory immobiliser as it's had an after market one put in and the key doesn't feel like it's got a chip.

I'll pm Golf Loon and see what his got.

I always get the genuine kit from the dealers and fit it to the original handle. That way you retain the original key.
Costs around $60 from memory and are uprated so as to prevent it happening years down the track.
Easy fix, just a touch fiddly swapping the springs and lock tumblers. 10 mins work.
