    Cutting out

Finally, after a year of abuse and often being driven on dirt roads, (apart from all the usual rattles) there's a minor mechanical fault on the old dear. Sometimes, when starting up, she'll cut out once or twice before finally running, helped by a blip of the throttle. Is it time for a fuel filter? Or what else should I check?

Sounds very much like a fuel filter...although it could be a few things. Fuel filters are cheap anyways, if you haven't replaced it in a year or so then go ahead

These starting problems are hard to diagnose over the net as there are a many possibilities. Best bet is to take it to someone to have a look in person and to scan for codes at the same time. I highly doubt its just the fuel filter, dont forget that is supposed to be a lifetime item that doesnt need changing - although i think it is benefitial to change it.
