Absolutely, broke down with a new one put in... and that went on me as well two weeks later
Well it has happened again. The wife started up the Vento yesterday morning and drove up to Noosa with no problems. 40 minutes later she gets into the car and it won't start. The ignition coil has had a melt down.
It is now the third time that we have had to replace one. They seem to only last around 2-3 years and they always seem to go the same way. The last time it happened she drove 600 metres down to the shops with absolutely no indication of a problem. 5 minutes later she gets back into the car and it won't start. I go down and open the bonnet to see black goo dripping out of the coil.
Does anyone else have this problem? I suppose our Vento gets used virtually every day and does about 600km's a week and has done for for the last 10 years.
I now keep a spare handy. Strangely it is the same coil as the Cupra and touch wood it has lasted over 3 years without a problem.

yup , my mk3 gti coil went within 2 weeks of buying it. once i found out it was a common fault i went and got a spare from the scrappy for five quid , tested it and chucked it in the boot. Never needed it though.
happend to my vento three times.
I always carry a spare in the Golvebox. They are rubbish. Yup 3 years from a new one is about right Bora Sport.
We do ocassionally see ones that still work from 94 (they are all date stamped), but not many.
They fit lots of VWs, G3s Polos, T4s, Passats, SEATs and more besides.
They must have a good earth strap, or their lives are shortened and I aways move the T4 ones out of the waterline.
They sell this stuff "Dampstart" in the UK. It comes in an aerosol and coats your ignition system in a clingfilm type seal. Never seen it here, but it would prevent water ingression on these units.

exploding ignition coil that sounded dangerous? I think too much current passing through the wires I guess some wiring issue too.
