I think that's a fair conclusion. I'm sure the cruise computer wouldn't operate if all systems weren't ok. It probably has a feed from the abs system. I'm about to start a cruise system retrofit so i'll post up any info that i discover.

Quite often if the cruise isn't working it will be caused by one of the micro switches, either on the brake pedal or clutch pedal. It could also be the switch on the stalk.

Can you hear the relay clicking when you try to turn it on and activate/set it?

It's run on vacuum with a reservoir in the front quarter panel that runs up to a valve near the firewall then into the cabin where it pulls on the accelerator. The reservoir can crack, the plastic lines deteriorate... lots of reasons. But the relay should still click if the system itself is working.

As for the ABS light. Maybe, but my ABS never worked (although I think someone had removed the bulb since mine wasn't on ) and the cruise worked very nicely (although if you hit a big bump it would stop which I assume was the brake switch knocking).

cruise control works from the signal in the ABS system for wheel rotation speed. If your ABS light is on then fair assumption this is stopping your cruise control from working.

There is a wheel speed sensor for each wheel and all of mine worked fine. Just the ABS pump/board/something? was dead. Maybe it's possible to have it part working for cruise control to work??
