ditching oem stereo & mk3 similarities

2 questions. firstly the flashing light on the stereo, does this mean theres any problems with ditching the awesome casette radio for a cdplayer ?

Also when ordering parts for a Mk3, ie headlights, strut bracing, wheel arches etcetera, are there any model differences that restric these choices?
...obviously VR6, but is this limited to suspension, brakes, engine mods?

Thanks dudes, your all awesome and all this help is makin gmy decision to purchase a Mk3 much simpler!

The factory audio can be ditched no problems. Plenty of us have after market systems.

I'm not too ofay with the parts side of things yet. Others will know!

the flashing light is the security on the radio only, feel free to just yank it out.

just make sure you specify the year and model correctly and you'll have no problems.

No differences between the models for those stuff but there was a change in late 94 where a few things got changed, mostly cosmetic but nothing too drastic.

Off the top of my head its single->dual chamber headlights, square->oval side indicators, antennae on guard->antennae on roof, colour coding of bumpers, side skirts factory on GL's, immobiliser, ABS (i think), air box change for GL theres prob a few more that i cant remember

And yeh engine, drivetrain, brakes and suspension differs from gl to vr6.

    hey simon78

Ive got the original cassette player with a 10 diskchanger hooked up. I think its cool. I like the original look with the 'Volkswagen' on it. think its ace. And it doesnt scream out "steal me!"

to the point lol, If u do get a mk3 with the type of cassette player and its in top knotch nick, can I have it? my buttons have faded to white and its bugging me.

As for ordering parts, Im sure you would have no probs just saying, for example, "I need _____ for 1995 golf GL".

    Or am I wrong?

So long as you're ordering from someone who knows or has access to the right information about which model the certain part fits, you should have no problem at all I'm pretty sure strut braces that fit on VR6's can fit on GL's but it might not be the other way around because of the fatty engine. Usually for things that might not fit due to clearance, i'd hazard a GUESS and say you'd be fine if you had a GL. vr6's are the ones that tend to have the stupid fitment issues.

What sort of things do you want to buy? Maybe if you give us a list we can give you advice for each bit so you know what you're doing .

EDIT: Sorry, I've seen the list now hahaha.
Headlights are fine, I've mentioned strut bracing, wheel arches are common across the board (but there are textured black ones and colourcoded smooth ones).
Anything like wheels and driveline stuff is specific to GL/CL and then VR6. VR6 has different driveline setup (it's referred to as ''widetrack'') and therefore the suspension may not always be compatible either. I have suspension from a mate who has a GL so there are exceptions with suspension lol.

Engine mods are of course engine specific. Most engine mods for sale will give you the right information you need on the page to tell you what engine it's for. the vr6 engine is AAA so DON'T buy anything with that on it lol...I'm not sure about the GL/CL engine numbers so someone else would have to clarify. Usually the engine number is the key

Hope that helps, feel free to correct me if i've got anything wrong, anyone!

Which year did these changes take place?

I was looking at cars on car sales and some 95 GL's have seem to have the face lift where as other 96 and 97 GL's didn't?
