Can anyone else tell me how much all the 'essential' rubber bits will be and which ones are good to replace?

your looking at around $150 for bearings and rubbers (for the front) and around $40 a side just for the rubbers for the rears from your local VW dealership. if your doing new suspension its best to replace them. More than likely they will be shot. - as I learned the hard way by having to completley remove the front strut assy shortly after I installed them.

front rubber: this sits ontop of the bearing

Can you describe the noise? Creaking? Clunks?

I had clunkiness with the coilovers in my Seca, turned out to be the strut tops which were struggling with the extra hardness of the new struts. New strut tops cured it, could be a similar problem
