What are the problem areas of these cheap coils? Would a spring and damper package negate some of these concerns and potentially be cheaper?

Have you thought about thinking outside the box. My MK2 (identical suspension to a MK3) has Spax lowered springs with standard shocks and the ride is really good. The shorter and stiffer springs stop the body roll and the standard springs soak up the bumps much better than the cheap Hottuning coilovers I used to have. Even the Spax gas shocks I had were way too stiff.

I do a lot of driving on country roads between Canberra and the coast as well as driving around Canberra (over 1000 ks a week). The setup I have now looks great (3 inches lower), corners hard and rides well. It's a bit stiffer than standard which is how I like it. My teenage kids hate it but they aren't car enthusiasts.

    Cheers

I've found a few reports of FK's failing in regards to shocks leaking/****ty seals which the 6 month warranty worries me a tad. Yet to hear any bad news about JOM other than the fact they sound like they would be stiff as hell.

Yeah this is what I seem to be finding from here and multiple forums. The comfort and the fact that I can get FK locally is appealing. Getting silly low isn't really on the cards as it's a daily driver (comfort) and I like my sump in one piece.

Well I've got a bonus of $500 coming through from work. Treated it as a sign - FK's in the post!

I'm still waiting for mine to arrive but I'm also waiting on new strut mount rubbers from the UK. I'll be referencing this guide - Mk3 Golf Gti coilover fitting guide (Pic Heavy) - How To's - EastCoastDubs

Just saw on the FK website you can order them too: FK Automotive Tuning Shop | Coilover AK Street VW Golf 3 inc. Cabrio Yr. 1991-2001 | purchase online

Seems to show that they are 171Euro delivered to Aus which is around $270, has anybody bought from them before or what's the difference between them and the local stores?

    Is it the same model?

My track oriented polo had the FK AK's in it when I bought it, they were awful. The owner had done it as a short term stop gap. On the street at slow speeds they were equiv to having a car on lowered springs and mismatched struts, so potentially bearable if ride quality isn't high on the list, at highway speeds they made me feel seasick really quite quickly. On the track it got worse. They were probably on the car for less than 2yrs and not high kilometers. They hadn't leaked but there was some sticking in the shaft play once it was all removed. Whether the car was too low so wore them out prematurely, struts knackered or just how they are I'm not entirely sure.

I'd never recommend such low end suspension and go with a reputable spring strut combo if price was key, e.g. Monroe, KYB, etc.
