Can you please tell me what part this is?

    Hello all

As a 2nd day owner of a VR6 and a backyard mechanic can you please tell me what this is.

I tracked this down whilst looking for vac leaks.

Would this cause a rough rev?
    Would 8month old fuel contribute?

    Thanks

Split would cause vac leak and a sketchy idle.

What you have broken there (in the photos) is the PCV. It's only for emissions and doesn't effect the running of the car at all, at least for me it didn't, I drove with a broken one for a month or two. You'll just get oil around that area and might be able to smell it in the cabin.

It definitely could be effecting idle adding air after the MAF sensor.
First i would say fix the PCV, clean your MAF sensor with contact cleaner, clean out your throttle body and a new tank of petrol should get you going smooth.
If you want to go all out get a new fuel filter, plugs and a 02 sensor but the above should be more than enough.

For the PCV, follow this guide VWVortex.com - My breather PCV mod worked for me!
Easiest thing first would be to fill up with ULP98 and see if that changes anything, it could just be bad petrol.

    Hmmm well repaired PCV.

    no change.

It has a tremble so slight at idle and exaggerates as the revs lift. It can be felt through steering wheel like brake shudder.

all tests done in neutral. I did rev as hard as I could (shame) to clear anything and it maxed at 5,000 revs. Some thing is wrong.

    preventative steps taken.
    Cleaned plugs
    new fuel
    checked leads and coils

I did take each lead off while running it was hard to form a conclusion with this test.

My view is plugs.. any one agree?

^^^ As anthony said, try to borrow a good coil pack. As for plugs, they're cheap enough to just replace them anyway. my 2c
