I had the roof out and cables replaced in 2008 on my old Mk1 cabrio. Bought the parts from M&T Manufacturing. They do great OEM roof parts and at the time the roof kit with cables was about $450AUD to my door from the US. Here's the link for Mk3:

I didn't consider a DIY job as the rear window is a tricky bit you can't affords to stuff up on so many levels. As I was living in Brisbane I searched out a motor trimmer and did some research to find a reputable specialist All up I paid about $1200 (including the $450 above for parts) and it looked great! He also fixed up some tears in the rear seat at the same time. Now like you I am in Melbourne with my Mk3 cabrio so some searching out for a good motor trimmer is a great start. My brother in law helped out someone down here with the parts, and they used a local motor trimmer. WIll get name as soon as I know, just be sure that the drainage pipes (near the pivot point of the roof) are repoisitioned properly as they are notorious for being disturbed, causing puddles in the rear of the car.
