    A/C compressor failure?????

    Hi all

The A/C on my wife"s Mk3 cabby has stopped working. The compressor clutch is operating as is the engine fans but the hoses/pipes remain warm.
I took it to the mechanic thinking it may need a gas. When he put the gauges on, the pressure was normal and when he started the A/C, there was no pressure change.

From what I've read here, the compressor failure seems to happen regularly but what actually occurs? Broken shaft, spline, keyway, pistons etc? It's a Sanden SD7V16.

I'm not that well informed on the VW problems but if anyone wants to throw their 2 cents worth into the ring, I'm more than willing to listen.

    Any thoughts?

    cheers...Andrew

Both compressors on both my Mk3s have failed. I don't know what the problem was in either case, but I put new ones in both times.

I will probably have a new compressor for sale soon, which was installed in the car, but I did not get around to gassing it up. Looks like the car is going to be written off because some uninsured muppet ran into it. I am going to remove the compressor before handing over the car, along with some of the other new items I have put on it.

Let me know if you are interested.

Not a problem. Insurance could take some time to get sorted this end.

Do you mind if I ask what a reco compressor costs?

They retail for $450 but they stuffed up their web site and still had an ad there for $290 but it was for November and December 2011. I didn't pick up on the year of the ad and when I double checked the price, the sales weren't aware of the ad. (apparently sales aren't kept in the loop with specials). Prices of parts have gone up over the last 12 months but he let me have it for $370 and another 50 for a receiver drier. I thought it was fairly reasonable considering the prices of VW parts in general.

    cheers
