I just sold my well looked after 160xxx klm 97 model VR6 with all factory options for $5600 with rego/ RWC so not much more than that I reckon!

Too old to really classify as 'lemons' I think, just cars that haven't been maintained. Keep an eye on:

    1) Timing Chain rattle - look it up ($2k repair)
    2) ABS failure (check the light comes on and turns off on startup)
    3) Heater core failure
    4) Rust under tailights, under door seals and along front of top of windscreen
    5) Basic engine stuff like service history, cooling system (plastic bits go at this age), cracked coil pack (rough idling)
    6) Cracked intake tubing can be a pain, have a look and check it all.

There are various other things, but just remember they're getting pretty old!

Sorely miss the sound, the 1.8T just doesn't match up. But find a good one and it'll treat you well, mine only let me down once with a bad crank angle sensor (mind you I put alot of money into it!).

Pretty much what Max already said are the major items. Here's a PDF with a checklist of things you may want to take with you. Most of them are general for any car but it's still a good guide.
