Timing chain, if it hasn't been done should be soon I'd guess. That with a clutch will be 2k~ from a shop.
Looking at a 1997 VR6. It's in beautiful original condition:
(Apparently) Genuine VW leather
187xxxkms
No rust whatsoever
Logbook servicing - coilpack just been done
Hasn't had anything done to it so in stock condition but very well looked after.
All the windows work well
Black Magic original paintjob
Issues are:
Heater Core is broken!!
Drivers seat wont click in unless you get off the seat (common in the vr6s ive seen)
Front windscreen lower seal is damaged (common again?)
Stereo system (had the original six cd stacker) doesnt work
Timing chain hasn't been done yet (but no rattles when we took it for a run)
Steering wheel/ gear knob quite worn
Back tyres need to be done
Top of back bumper has been resprayed
Will add other stuff if i think of it. Any ideas one what itd be worth?? How much longer until id need to do the timing chain/ clutch??
Thanks guys.

Timing chain needs to be done every 100,000km I believe. Heater core is a $1k job at a shop.
The other bits are small. Definately take it for a mechanical inspection before buying.
Without seeing it, I'd say $4.5k - You have about $3k worth of maint jobs waiting for you, should you purchase.
Also, since you're new its worth saying this: VR6's are expensive cars to maintain. Ensure you have an adequate budget to keep it running. My services regularly cost me $600+ and have done so for years now. Caveat Emptor!

It's extremely hard to say. If there is zero noise, one could assume you have a while yet. Vw claim that the chains will out last the engine. But as everyone owner knows this is not the case.
If it has been properly maintained and regularly serviced, the chains can last a long time.
Yeh it didn't have any rattles at all so its possible I guess that it was done by the owner before the seller. Yeh 4.5k sounds about right to me. Although because its in such good nic in terms of originality might fetch him 5k. He's asking 8k at the moment though....
I am well aware of the costs of maintaining the car but at the same time would be keen to do a bit of the work myself. I've been won over by the v6... The 4cylinders just don't match up haha.
Any ideas on how long the clutches last?
He will never get 8k. Ever. I wouldnt even get 8k for mine and I've got a limited edition model with all the fruit!
My clutch has lasted the entire time I've had the car, which is near on 6 years(!), but I nanny the thing.

Agreed. Oh well, I told him to give me a ring if he decides to come down on price. Very nice car simply because it hasn't been molested at all. Good to know about the clutch.
Looking at a 94 tomorrow with black audi rs4 rims. Should be a bit of fun. Asking 6k but has had timing belt, heater core etcetc done and appears to be in good cond.
not this one is it?
Moving on up - new vr6
it is... Is there a problem I should know about?
