best way to transport 2 mountain bike

On the Mk3, the thick black bar which connect the two rear strut, which is also used for strapping down the baby seats. Does it actually have any suspension surpose or is it purely used for anchoring purposes?


It is impossible to transport 2 mountain bikes in the car with out removing the bar.

Anyone have pics of bike racks on mk3/ golfs ?

AFAIK that bar's only purpose is to strap the kiddie seats to. In my case I have two screws which means I can pull it out at will Your welcome to have a look see how it's done since technically it's an ADR requirement to have child restraint points... although I doubt anyone will ever ask if you just rip it out.

I had a good look this morning, but the 2 screws you mentioned. Mine seemed to be a "one way screw" and the bottom nut is welded on.

Also any one know if it has any suspension purpose?

Louis mine is the same as yours since then I have ripped mine out its a waste of space and weight if you ask me, however you can use it as a rearbar but its useless.

I will have to have a closer look at the bottom nut, but at a guess I would say the nut is welded there for a thread to screw into and not welded to the screw.

In my case someone must have replaced those screw with normal ones because I can and have removed and reinstalled the bar many times

Louis, if you're planning to transport the bikes a lot of times, it might be worthwhile to buy bike racks or a bike carrier hitch.

I am always carrying 2 bikes in the back of my Ibiza.Fold the seats, remove the wheels and they go in easy. No point in buying racks to carry them on the outside IMO. More drag, less secure etc. Spend the money on bike bits instead!!

If you never intend to have kids in seats in the back, why keep the bar fitted?

My kids have booster seats that use the adult seat belts.

The other thing you could do, is stick them on the back seat. I used to carry 2 bikes in my MK1 GTI like that. Again with the wheels off they fit easily and the wheels go in the rear footwells. You still have all the boot. Only bad point is if it's well muddy, it'll be harder to keep the back seat clean.

I am considering quitting the gym and use the $ to supe up my bike and since my GF just bought a mountain bike yesterday we will probably go biking more often.

Transportation is the problem. I don't exactly want to further worsen my interior. A bike rack I would consider depending on the appeal and ease of unbolting.

I suppose both ways would have pros and cons.

I think I would remove the kiddy seat anchor for now. So the bar has no suspension purpose right ??

I carry a downhill and a hardtail in the boot of my GT-P, but requires a lot of fiddling and wheel removal etc. I wanted a bones, but it wouldnt fit over/under my rear spoiler

They aren't fitted to European MK3s, so no.
