Angry Bent valves - OUCH & F--- YOU said my wallet

OK as title reads i am the proud and super pi--ed off owner of a engine with bent valves

cut a long story short - Timing belt snapped It got ugly, I got ugly, bent valves, very loud smashing sound Now im just a static VW display enough said ??

In my hunt for quotes what I was also told about reconditioned compered to replaced -
Reconditioned engine - an engine that has been stripped down and reconditioned before being sold.usually a 6 month waranty
Replacement Engine - an engine that has been tested and supplied workingbut not stripped down . usually 3 month waranty

I was told by a nameless mechanic that unless I give them my existing engine there was a core deposit fee or something like that of about $250 ?? has anyone heard of that ??

All the engines I can find, reconditioned or replacement are around the 110 - 140 mark and Im super worried that all the voodoo that happened from 100,000 to 160,000 klms on my last engine will all happen again and all im going to end up doing is replacing all the same stuff I did before - so is it worth another few grand down the drain .....

Anyone in brisbane get a VW engine done or replaced that can recomend a good mechanic that wont bent me over the hood ?

How much more sh-t can go wrong with this car ???

If u look after your engine and change the timing belt i am sure it won't happen again. The 2.0L 8v engine is very strong, i am suprised that it bent valves as i was sure that it was a non interference engine. I guess u are just unlucky
My advice buy a second hand engine change the oil, filter and the belt, whack it in happy motoring

In the UK I could get a motor back on the road again for the cost of a gasket kit, cambelt and tensioner, a few valves, oil change stuff and some coolant.

It would cost 250 bucks tops for all the stuff to do it and maybe an extra 100 to skim the head.

Don't give up on it easy.

Yeah you could get the head rebuilty pretty easy and cheaply.

I had a Mk3 2L GL and was suprised to discover they were an interference engine, unlike the 1.8.

I had 4 bent valves and got new valves and a head skim for a couple of hundread bucks. Then a gasket kit $80s, belt, tensioner and acessory belts.

Probably would cost you $350 plus removing and refitting.
$500 is a very good prece, $1000 is average, more than that I would not pay.

DOHC Dave in Brissie could do that job for you on a budget

I believe this may be the exception, not the rule. Take the head off, use the opportunity to have it cleaned up a little. You could even consider a new cam maybe?
Imparts at Eagle Farm have all the gear u need on the t-belt side of things. When I changed my T-belt I paid roughly 15% of what VW parts wanted for a water pump.

When one door closes another opens, and a 2L with some fresh headwork opens doors!

If you want a whole motor try Markus at KMJ Sumner Park..3279 4101

Markus has been great since I bought the car supplying the odd hard to find part. He is actually the front runner for the repairs at the moment.

is it fate that he has a 2L ADY engine sitting there ???
    its on ebay for $500

All repair bills have to get passed to the wife to be approved. If I had my way id go nuts and spend all my money instead of almost all of my money
