Although I know 2 seconds is at the greater end of differences I've read, some have it less than a second difference, nonetheless traffic lights, two stockies next to each other, my money is on the manual. For me personally manuals win hands down for fun factor too, I dare say I'd rather daily my NA manual than even a boosted auto... each to their own though.

If perfomance isnt relevant then why go from auto to manual ?

Yeah autos are slower than a manual with a good driver , but it doesnt mean it justifies not using the auto as a basis for modification . The money spent converting an auto to manual could be spent on the auto which will end up going faster .

I'm not one to argue on forums, please reread my comments if you need clarification, or reconsider them in the context of the OP's question/position. Thanks. But I agree the auto isn't to be binned at first sight (mine was because it was slipping), it all depends on what your expectations of the car are. Fun runabout, my preference is manual, getting into more serious drag racing, auto has its merits.

To the top , you wont need a pedal box as the auto is the same as the manual, you change he pin to a longer manual one and fit the manual pedal. Done a few , very doable but not a simple job, best to have a donor car as you may have to scrounge around for all the bits, if you need a comprehensive list if you take it to the next level im sure i could compile one for ya. As for the reason to convert i prefer the VR with a manual as the 096 and 01m trannies are not the most reliable thing, well as im writing this the manuals have their days too. Ah well.
Seb you bringin the VR up to QLD when done?? ( Warwick)

Thats the thing , you replace a tired / broken auto with a just as tired manual gearbox . And you pay a heap of money . You may as well just get the auto rebuilt .

I'll be up at Warwick again , not sure which car/s will go up . When will you bring a car down ?

Yep true that, off topic slightly you read about how much can my DSG handle??? never really hear the quedtion raised about Manuals, they are rated too. back on topic - yeah hard to find a fresh manual now unless you strike gold with a low k car , one you may even know perhaps, buying a second hand one and a set of xray vision glasses would be the go.
Dont have a car worthy of drags mate, my A3 suppose would have been but its up for sale now. I have an engine and lots of goodies destined for something in the future, just a time thing really, when my wife graduates that time thing might just happen
