its probably just a case of forgetting to reset it..... you can do it yourself via the buttons on the cluster

Yeh it's the left button, check your owners manual it'll give detailed instructions.

Haha, will give it a look over! Weird that the vw specialist didn't change it though.

More problems develop! Car now struggles to start and when it does it sounds and feels lik era misfiring, super rich, blows lots of smoke that stinks of fuel and a little of oil, dies under load and dies when driving, just splutters and is impossible to start and move. Any ideas? So difficult!!!!

Without seeing anything, I'd say it's maybe overfueling for safety reasons.
I'd bet you've got multiple issues, coilpack plus air leaks plus bad MAF could cause this, plus other intermittent faulty parts.
When were the leads and plugs last changed?

Mechanic who did the timing chains says he did them but I pulled them out yesterday and they don't look like you'd expect plugs with less than 3000k on them to look, not just the electrodes either. So really unsure what he changed or didn't. Investigating coilpacks and maf.
Will try to start with maf unplugged this afternoon as suggested on some other forums
