Airvent problem

Hi Guys,

A few weeks back, my car was making a squeeling noise and i noticed it would go away when i turned the internal circulating air off. And now, i have to use external air circulation because even when i push the air button 'on' it still sucks air from the outside. Which also means im stuck breathing crappy fumes when im stuck behind a smokey car!... AC is working fine (thank god), BUT like i said, only the external circulation is working.

Is this a big job or is it just a small replacement part?... im guessing (and hoping) its just a bit of loose/melted wiring somewhere.

Anyone else had this problem?

Any thoughts?

i've got exactly the same problem - looks like the exact same car too...

I've found that the squealing will change pitch depending on how much you rev the engine... just another clue to finding a fix....

is there anyone else that has this problem? I'm assuming it is something to do with the way the a/c system closes the vents to re-circulate the air inside the car...

My VR6 doesn't make squeeling noises, but turning on internal circulation doesn't seem to close the external vent (or at least close it properly) as I still get smoke/fumes/whatever I'm trying to keep out, coming in.

I also find that that the air seems to be somewhat warm, like the heater box it actually not closing off properly. It also very likely that since it's just pulling air in through the filter, it's picking up residual heat from the black body work rather than the heater box.

In my case the air con doesn't work... yet... but I am very interesting in hearing if there is a solution to getting the internal air circulation working properly.

same!... i reckon it has to be with the way the system closes the vents... perhaps it is an electric motor that is too old to hold the vent closed? i think we need some kind of input from someone who knows what they are talking about (i.e. Golf_Loon)

Hawk, I've found that too - and my aircon is broke and my car is black... probably the same thing.

geez i'm keen to found out if there is a fix for the annoying squealing... its giving me the *****s.

Could it be the vacuum line to the heater from the engine bay?
Depends where the squealing is from I guess.

Also there is a diaphram under the passengers end of the dash that could be the culprit.

It's sort of funny they the hot/cold switch and the head/foot/windscreen switch are both manual cable driven affairs, yet the recirculate is electric...

I'm sure there is a perfectly good reason for it, but it does seem a little odd to me.

As for fixing the aircon itself, I'm still in two minds on that one, either the local guy (who has always been very good), or finding someone who knows a little more about the Golf itself.

Anyone know any air conditioning repair people that specialise in VW or at least have some knowledge of them?? Preferably located in or around Western Sydney.


If you know someone in another state might as well stick them in here too for the benifit of others, a listing of different repair people/techs for different VW concerns will never go astray...

For me, its on the passengers side like you said... so what would i need to do to fix that?... Or would i need to bring it down to you to find out?..

Find the hose in question then stick a pressure gauge in it to see I guess, sorry nothing detail but just off the top of my head

Pressure guage, you mean "see if your tounge sticks to it" right?? It's at that point you can guage if it barely sticks or sucks hard... Then ask what it should be doing


Or maybe I have just syphoned one too many tanks of fuel from old cars with a hose and no mint
