What car is it mate?? VR6? 8v?
Probably compressor, common on Golf 3s.
My air-con didnt work when i bought my car, and that didnt bother me. With summer coming up however i was having a little poke around when i was checking my oil, and found that fuse #6 (air con/blower) was a 30A, while the bentley lists it as a 20A.
Furthermore, relay position 1 (air con) is empty and i can't see any relay labelled with a 13 (as the bentley says).
When the car is running and i hit the air con switch the engines idle picks up slightly, but the compressor clutch doesn't engage.
i understand that my car may vary from what is in the manual, as its not specifically covered, but as far as i can tell (from my quick inspection) everything else on the fuse box matches up.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what i should do next to figure out where the problem lies? I'd like to do as much as possible to figure out the problem before i take it to an air-con specialist. (I know i can check the AC pressure switch to see if it is faulty and telling the compressor not to switch on - whether there is pressure or not)

Could be plenty of things, firstly itll have to have the right amount of r134A for a start, then if it has you will be checking the power to the clutch on the compressor, power it up too to see if it chills. The cooling fans must run too to keep the temp down on the condensor thus lowering the pressure, there is a high low pressure switch that watches this, its located on the drier. I could waffel on as there is loads of variables. Have it checked properly to verify the fault
