Unless you know absolutely for sure that the 2nd handie is Really good then look for a recon mate. If your compressor is knackered you will have to flush the system. Bearing in mind depending on how bad yours was may mean a condensor and /or evap change too as they cant be flushed properly, tubes are too small. Only depending on how bad yours is mind. To add to this if the second handie craps itself then the same goes crap all though the system and never ending drama. You will also need a reciever dryer if you are opening your system mate and this is a no brainer..
If you are stuck these guys sell recons - C.A.R 1300652861. They are covered by a 10000k , 6mnth warranty

I have tested second hand ones for $150.
Or fully recod ones for $420 with 6 months warranty.
JMac is right, at the least get the system vacuumed out.

Got mine replaced too including the A!C Receiver Drier been wanting to fix my air-conditioning unit ever since it bugged down.
