Air Bag Light On - Questions?

My airbag light is on permanently and wont go off.
I tried the Battery off for 2 hrs then back on, and it didn't work.
So i have disconnected the 4 pin plug in the dash to switch it off.......

Has anyone had this problem and had to get a mechanic to reset it with the Computer and how much did it cost?

If this light is on, does that mean the airbag will not go off in a crash???? and / or if the indicator light is disconnected will that also effect it due to say some sort of drop in back voltage (i ask this one as the 4 pin connector for the Airbag light has a bit of electronic gear behind it, more than would be needed to just power an indicator light)

get someone to scan it for you with a vagcom. The error code displayed will give you a better idea of whats going on.

Most likely cause of the error is the slip ring needing replacement

If you are lucky, it just means the steering wheel has been taken off.

You need a computer and VAGCOM to reset the airbag system.

Or a decent scanner with all protocols

Yeah and if you are unlucky the slip rings need replacing, you do not want to know how much VW are asking for them! My feeling is that the airbag will not go off if the warning light is on.

Pleanty of working clock springs here for a lot less than VW if anyone needs.
