    Aftermarket Sun roof

Anyone have any experience with this sort of thing?

What sort of money would it cost to put one in and is it going to permanently leak?

I remember seeing an article in an Autosalon magazine - it was a product review and the sunroof cost them $2000 all up to fit. They used the Webasto units - http://www.webasto.com.au/am/en/am_a...roofs_485.html

They were saying how it wouldn't compromise chassis stiffness as you're adding more metal with a sunroof unit...

I have one in the mk 2.

I'd prefer just plain roof, cause it doesn't look anywhere near oem. The roof is slightly 'creased' around the sunroof as well. over all, it just looks a bit tacky. [my one that is]

Please don't fit one in your VR mate.

In the UK there was a phase in the 80s and 90s where every man and his dog was doing them. You never bought a car secondhand without going for the mud flaps, mats and a glass sunroof. They were about 50 quid and really cheaply made. There were expensive electric ones that slid back outside the roof, like an early CRX.

It also ruined the value of many otherwise really tidy mk1 GTIs.

Not saying it would do the same to a VR6 but you never know.

    Nor did I.

Untill I had one. good for cooling on hot days [no AC]. sometimes at night esp in summer it's just perfect! having the nice coooool air ruffle your hair!

I like having one. But wouldn't go to the effort of putting on in..

most of the local VR6s I have seen with sunroofs seem to have been dealer fitted. Theyre quite OEM looking except for the switch gear which is just generic. Its not that uncommon

Unless you're going for a high quality unit I wouldn't do it Aaron. Mine is a Hollandia which I think was a dealer fitted option and it's great, no leaks etc. Very happy with mine, but having said that I wouldn't get one unless it was factory or very high quality. The cheaper ones ALWAYS end up leaking at some stage and as you can imagine it's quite hard to reverse.

I'd love a sunroof in my mk3 but the original owner was too cheap to get one. And its gonna stay sunroofless I couldn't imagine getting an aftermarket one, I just think to get a remotely decent one youd end up spending a fair chunk of what your cars worth anyways.

There was a thread about 12 months ago, but I don't remember which, section about this very subject.

Someone spoke up about them because he used to fit them. Interesting thread that was.
