I can understand wanting a 2 door, but if you can't find a 2 door, why not just buy a VR6, instead of buying a GL 4dr and swapping a VR in?
As for doing the swap. Having a complete intact donor is best and easiest way to do this swap, IMO.

A lil background info:
so my first car was/is a 99 holden vectra 2.2 16v (i was aiming for a golf but got this one at a good price). I've always been interested and loves golf's. My uncle has a mk2 gti which has become a family treasure, my brother, quakes, has had two mk3's in his posession. So i think its about time i get one of my own!
The Plan:
In a nutshell, I'm planning on getting a mk3 (preferably a 2 door cl or a 4 door gl if i cant find a 2 door) and engine swapping it to a vr6 engine with extra room in the future for forced induction.
what I need is any advice from you guys as to what the good, the bad nd the ugly is when it comes to doing an engine swap of this nature. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Yeah buying a 4 door gl and swapping a vr6 in is pointless, muxh better off just buying a vr6. The swap will cost more once you do it all.
Swapping a vr into a 2 door would be awesome though. Remember you need more than just the motor though, you also need all the suspension and brakes which isn't a huge job to do, but not small either, and if you don't have a full vr6 to pull bits off and are buying what you need, it will add up quickly

Thanks guys! I've had this discussion many a times with my family and we all tend to agree that finding a good vr6 can be a bit of a mission, however i've recently found a place where I can get a brand new vr6 engine for about $5k, yes it would still be cheaper to get a vr6 car, but having a 2 door vr6 is going to be a little project of mine. thanks Ben J for the advice man ill definitely have to look at upgrading the breaks and suspension. Jarred, your right mate but i'll be looking at a 2 door for sale over the weekend and hopefully ill be able to get it

Surely you dont mean brand new... rebuilt or something? 5k is a heap for a VR6 though.
As above though, just buy a VR6 if you dont really care about the 4/2 door. But a 2 door woould be nice...

Yeah basically to get it legal you have to swap all of the running gear as well.
There's heaps of decent 4 door vr6s out there and they're pretty cheap really. Don't be afraid to wait and travel for the right car. All three of my cars have come from Sydney. The vr6 also has other nice bits compared to the gl/cl, such as exterior lights and grill, interior, etc etc. You can swap all of this over to another model (which is what I did with my two door) but like I said, if you don't have a written iff vr6 or something as a parts car, it would end up costing quite a bit.
2 door vr6 swapped mk3s pop up for sale every now and then too. If you really want one, maybe put a wanted add out and someone might sell you theirs.

it seems as thought it is a new engine that can be made and thats why the price is so high, @mb1907953. what do you mean all the running gear @ben j? and the reason as to why I want to do this little project is because I really want a vr6 project car but i need a new daily drive aswell, a cheap 2 door cl or gl would be a great daily drive while i save up for a vr6 engine

5k is a stupid high price for a 12v engine. Regardless of condition.
Running gear as in; suspension, brakes etc. it's all revised to cope with the heavier weight.

i love me some 2dr mk3 vr6 long time, but do a 2 dr mk2 gti vr6 if youre in conversion mode.
ive got a complete VR6 parts car and if i somehow manage to snaffle a cheap 2dr mk2 gti without anyone on this board knowing, id do it in a heartbeat!
but +1 to what everyone else has said on this board. just buy a vr6.
Well gearbox, shifter and drive shafts obviously, rear beam and brakes (including hard and soft brake lines, handbrake cables and proportioning valve), front control arms/ball joints, tie rods, hubs etc, and front brakes aswell. Hard lines for the front are the same I think, can't remember if soft ones are, was a couple years ago I did it. Should also change the shocks and springs to vr6 ones unless you are putting aftermarket ones in, which most would recommend.
You'll also need engine mount brackets, exhaust, hoses, all engine wiring, ecu and all accessories (ac compressor and such).
I'm sure there's more, but that's the basic things you need for the conversion.
I wouldn't buy a new vr6 for 5k, you could get a used one and get it fully reconditioned to be like new for a fair bit less than that.
