2ltr engine questions for conversion

Hi all, some of you may have seen my baja project floating about the forums.. but more to the point i am purchasing a 1995 mk3 golf with a 2ltr engine to eventually go into a rather modified baja bug.

Now while the engine is in the golf and running i want to do some work to it and get it ready for the buggy, i was planning on going a bit old school and converting back to carb and dizzy. So here are the questions so far:

Just checking but the mk3 is efi right? Im picking the car up in the next few weeks.

I have a 1.6 dizzy from a mk1, will this work in the 2 litre ?

I have a single 45 dcoe and lynx manifold off the 1.6, will this fit the 2ltr and be enough carb ?

Is there anything i will need specifically to convert back to carb?

Has anyone done a draw through turbo setup? Its used on aircooled engines a fair bit and is rather simple in theory, must use a carbon sealed turbo though.

If the fuel injection is a much better setup power wise i will keep it, but i sort of wanted to aviod the extra wiring and complocations when doing the conversion into the baja.

You're doing the same thing that I'm doing to my MK1, putting in a 2.0 from a MK3 with single DCOE45. The 45 will easily feed the 2.0 if it's jetted right

Why do you want to use the 1.6 dizzy? Stick with the one from the MK3.

Fuel injection will give more power and better fuel economy but I won't be using it. I've got a 2.0 16v with twin 40 Dellortos that will go into the Golf in a few months. I don't want to go to the hassle of fitting all the injection, plumbing, sensors, computer, wiring and a million other things just to take it all off later.

If you decide to stick with the carby you'll need a low pressure fuel pump and probably a fuel regulator. The pump from the MK3 will be high pressure to suit the injection.

MK3 dizzy won't work for a carby, there's no advance built in.

You can use the 1600 one with an adapter bush. You also need to use the drive gear off the 2.0

Bushes are commercially available or you can just turn one up your self. I've seen ones made by turning the end off the 2.0 one.

With the manifold you'll need to block off the water gallery and fashion a blank off plate to cover the injector ports.

The lynx manifold will bolt up but there will be gaps where the injector clearances are in the head. Just make up a sandwich plate to sit between head and block to block them off.

If you want to get real exotic, I've got an LPG system that was on a 2.0. LPG works pretty well on a draw through system. You'd just use the stock throttle body and manifold in that case.

Okay good information there thanks! Im still a little undecided which way to go still as the efi will probably work better offroad and not flood on hills ect.

Engine wise i was thinking of:
270 autotech cam
Adjustable cam gear
Mk4 header (or are there better extractors to use? Might have to make them to suit the buggy)

So with that in mind would it make more power with the digifant? Fuel injection with a chip? Or the single 45 weber tuned to suit?

Best option is digi with chip to suit the extra air/fuel provided by the hot cam. Should give a nice push from the 2 litre in the buggy.

Thanks sports racer! So i will keep the digi nd will just have to suck it up and pull the loom down ect. Probably wont be too bad once i get into it!
Now is there a prefered chip? I was thinking of an autotech but was unsure whether americans had differend ecu or anything?

Yes i have, however the cost of the computer might be a factor.. although megasquirt or microsquirt could be a goer? Anyone done somthing like this and have a build thread i can read through?
