The PCV system is in place to relieve pressure build-up within the engine crankcase. The stock system on our engines route from the front of the block to the rocker cover, which in turn vents the pressure out to the intake (back into the engine and out through the exhaust). I've kinda bypassed that by attaching an adapter on the front of the block that vents the pressure out into an oil catch can which vents out to the atmosphere (not legal). Proper thing to do is to route the oil catch can back into the intake system.
I've replaced the breather hose twice over about 30,000km, and it also made a huge mess of the engine bay, and I also found a decent amount of oil in the intake tube when I first took it off. Now it doesn't make a mess
Just hope a copper doesn't ask me to pop the bonnet haha.
