    16v conversion questions...

Ok when converting a 8v to 16v do i have to change the gear box? I have seen lots of people putting in the cable shift, changing sub frames, pedal boxes etc but do u have to... I know u have to change engine mounts and relocate a few things and there is heaps of wiring but what else is involved?

Like to here a few opions

    Cheers James

Nah no need to change gearbox u can use ur old 020. If u get an ABF its a bolt in affair with the wiring itll just plug in. With the 9A's its a bit more complicated and thats the route im going down (plan to use aftermarket management).

Things to consider are changing things like clutch, balljoints, cv's, mounts etc since uve got the engine out. And also if u want to do the vr6 brake conversion then thats basically swap subframe.

You dont need to change the gearbox.

The blocks are basically the same and bolt in the same.

I reckon the 8v box is a better setup for a 16v. VW overenginered them a bit. IMO

The Mk2 16v Had 139Hp and an 020 box, the Mk3 ABF had 150Hp and the VR6 style box. Bit of an overkill methinks over 11 HP.

Id use the 8v box with the 16v engine and the 16v box with the 20v.

I don't think there's a need to change subframes, unless you're going to 5 stud...???

The only other issue with 16v's, if you use a 16v motor that ran k-jet, then there's a bit of messing around with ecu's, etc...

The ABF conversion is a lot nicer...

And I can show you how it's done..

You can keep your subframe for the VR6 conversion, but you`d need to change A arms, hubs, anti roll bar and rack ends.

Been doing abit of reading and there is so many bloody opinions on doing 16v conversions on Mk3's...

Hers is my conclusion a 020 is fine just replace the dodgy rivets and run a TBD. The only difference between a 020 and a 02A is the cable shift and a stronger clutch i can easy get a better clutch for my 020... All the internals are standard just i think for the VR6 the final over drive is larger

Tell me if im wrong bcuz im still unsure
