If you don't have power windows, in behind the draw for the ash tray in the center console. Not sure where it is if you have power windows though.

I've got power windows and it is also behind the ashtray front.

I thought the power windows took up that part of the center console? from the few aussie import models i've seen im sure they do.

There is a little cubby hole on keep fit window models, that is blanked off when electric ones are fitted.

got a lighter in mine behind the ashtray + no power windows

Our Australian delivered Gti had no lighter. As I recall (it was a few years ago now) all the wiring is in behind the panel. I just put a cheap after market one in to recharge the mobile phone.
