are you talking oil temp or water???
i think your on about water but i havent a clue what time mine runs at, just in the lower 1/3 or the dial in the dash
any advice about the operating temp for 1.8 8valve mk2 engine ev i replaced temp sender unit and added equus gauges batt nd oil press which seems to be working ok the temp gauge starts at 50 degr celius the gauge just reaches 60 deg on a hot day at night just about 50 deg tried the original sender unit which reads even lower ive got new thermostat new fan switch 85 to 92deg which kicks on just fine just wanna know if this is normal or is it sender unit, guage itself or electrical fault i also connected it to the std gauge which reads normal any ideas or advice pls
I have an interesting one actually, a mates MkII has the gauge go way up off the scale as soon as the heater is turned on...
Like literally, you turn it on gauge takes 2 seconds and its says 30C hotter, then switch off, goes back down to where it stared in 2 secs.
I am thinking a short or something, what do you guys think?

Oil temp will go to 90degrees at least, a hard run will have it go over that. My ABF Toledo goes just over 100, the Ibiza very rarely did. Water temp is difficult to say. The VW owners manual will tell you that anywhere on the g gauge is normal as long as the warning light isn't flashing.
If you have numbers on the water temp, given it's under pressure, I wouldn't expect to see it go much over the 95.
gauges swinging when turning services on is a defo wiring issue. I used to see the same thing on my MK1 GTI when turning on the lights. I think it will be an earthing issue myself.

Driving to work today (90 k's, country drive, constantly between 110 and 120 kph) and the temp was between 90 and 96. Outside temp was 13.
Hope this helps

Hey Gavin.
My MK2 does this on Oil Temp.
It hovers around 116-120 on a 23 degree day. Also when you turn the fan on w/out A/C the oil temp shoots up 8-10 degrees, in a matter of seconds. It also drops by the same when I turn it off.
I once sent the car to my Auto Electrician and they laughed at me when I asked for a earth point check.
MY oil will tick over 100 in traffic. and I've seen up to ~114 when really giving it to it. Normal driving not in traffic it'll be around 90-95.
My water gauge rarely reaches past the first line (so about 1/3)
My water gauge did that, then I got a new thermostat and all was well.
