Just give it a full service , inc plugs , maybe a dizzy cap. And rotor too , and get someone to check timing and c/o adjustment (I'm pretty sure a base setting is adjustable)

I think this might have been asked before but I couldn't find it in my searches. (Plus always looking for any excuse to talk about my new baby )
What are your guys currently getting litres per 100km? I know the trip computer is not very accurate but I've been getting mid to high tens on my 91 GTI V8 auto.
Does that sound about right? I was thinking of changing the fuel and air filter as I don't think they have been done in a while.

The auto's aren't as efficient as the manual. I regularly see my auto in the 9s or so but manual i get as low as 5-6 on a regular basis. Ive compared it to actual fuel usage too and it isnt far off. Thats usually with some decent freeway work but when i have to slow down and speed up, i give it a bit

When I had the 1.8 in the car I was regularly getting low 6's / high 5's driving the 100 ks to work but that included a lot driving on country roads with no traffic lights. With the 2.0 it added another litre per 100 ks (but I also drove it a bit faster).
I found that the more I used the car the better it got. It took 3 months of daily driving to get down to low 6's. For me 3 months equals about 12,000 ks.

I had about 11 per 100km, mostly suburb drive. mid to high 10 definitely is too much even though it is a auto.

When I bought the car from Canberra, I asked them to do a basic service on the car as I was worried it won't make it back to sydney after been in storage for so long. They charged me for new spark plugs, oil and filter.
I'm trying to learn to do some of the servicing myself to save a bit of coin but want to know what do you guys reckon I could do myself and what should I leave to the pros when it comes to serving the ol' MK2's?

It all comes down to how much you know, how much you're willing to tackle and how much you like chocolate.
OK, I threw that last one in but there will be times when you need the anti-depressant qualities of chocolate. And anyone who doesn't like chocolate is a terrorist anyway.
Use this forum as a sounding board when you have problems with the car and we'll do our best to give you advice. At least you have a couple of Australia's best MK2 mechanics close by. Matt at Camden GTI and Peter at Canberra VW Centre (oddly enough located just south of Sydney at Kiama).
And don't be afraid to ask dumb questions. That's the best way to learn.
