Welcome to the forum and congrats on your MK2 GTI.
The "hunting" in my opinion is NOT normal and mine certainly never did it. Clean the ISV and check your throttle body switches.
good luck

Hey thanks for the advice guys, u guys are cool...ive always had french cars so im used to snobs and t***jobs
Yeah i hope i can sort that 5th gear thing out, im glad that it might not be as serious as i thought. I need a new gearstick boot, looks asif maybe the car yard grease monkeys have already had a go at the linkages
I was actually looking more for a Peugeot 405mi16 when i came across this little beauty...it was a in the moment thing...when i had a drive of it and saw that it had its spare and associated tools still in the boot, i had to have it. I put it on the credit card and drove it home! Meine first Deustch auto lol....
Actually those of u who have been to europe would know these things have a cult following over there...i remember being a teeny bopper and being a passenger in a mk2 GTI 16 valver...ill never forget it
I woulda gone for a Corrado G60 if they were available here
Ive only got a couple phone photos for y'as
Looks good mate... Hooting a 16v ey... Are u in Victoria?
Keep it up
Welcome pal!! Ill second the Ball and socket answer very common problem, from memory you could buy a nice repair kit for that and it wasnt to dear either. The hunting thing mate there is loads of little tricks you can do like Golf Loon says too many sensors but loads of things to try mate. Great Dubs the MK2 served my apprenticeship on them. Clean the ISV with shellite and reset the computer, pull the blue temp sensor off rev the engine to 3000rpm 3 times set the co if you can. Reconnect the blue temp sensor and rev her again to 3000rpm and we are done mate .Happy Days

Hey thanks all again for the advice
Yeah i am from Victoria and i am very tempted to perform all sorts of mods to the thing as i know theyre very tuneable but ive been there done that before (the spending of ones paycheck week in week out on ones car)
I gave it a bit on the freeway today and was so surprised at the smoothness of it at 150-160kph, my mate in a new holden astra turbo was certainly surprised that a car which cost 30k less kept up with him
Can u guys point me in the direction of a good manual? Please dont say Haynes...hopefully theres something better? then ill be able to have a go at these sensors...
bentley manual... amazon has a special on them atm
