Immobiliser defeat the ECU and use the factory wiring on the 1.8T. Much less effort than standalone and you get a proven tune to boot. Wire in the OBD socket and have real diagnostics too.
Don't forget to water the money tree!

Jeats, check out my thread in the restorations and conversions thread for anything and everything you'll need to know regarding a 1.8T in a mk2. The QPEng plug n play is a nice idae but i've recently discovered a way you can "cheat" and wire up a Haltech ECU to the QPEng loom, thus having a 'QPEng' plug n play that actually runs properly and is possible to tune without needing an eternity...
I've had many hard times, but its not that hard to do the 1.8t if you do the right research. I used a corrado 16v gearbox with a VR6 clutch for strength, but that engine just revs thru the gear ratios so quick i'm in 5th in no time and still have loads more speed left
There's heaps of coilover kits around. PM evorobin.
Just decide what YOU want and do it coz everyone has their own personal favourite conversion.
For me the 1.8t is the ultimate for power vs weight and tunability. That great big heavy VR6 is going to affect the balance of the chassis, but as for the ABF 16v, I have no experience...

I have a white gti with the 1.8 20vt that I'd be willing to sell(I wanna get a mk1 again). It's been registered in nsw but is currently in qld and has all the qld mod plates. Pm me if you wanna know more.
An ABF cupra actually has it's wiring loom on the other side of the engine bay, so there would be some splicing and lengthening of wires, and complete re-wrap of the engine loom need, i'd imagine!
Oh god, what was a simple idea, have turned into an idea of so many options.
I think for me the main priority is to get the position I am after in Orange, to have a valid excuse to get a Golf Then it is the toss up between a mk2 gti or mk3 vr6... Form there it is just a slow and steady pathway in getting better parts into the golf finishing off with the engine, or save up a bit extra and jump to a mk5 gti/r32 mk6 second hand

I can't agree with this one. I swear that when VW designed the Mk3 the main theme was to turn it into a German Corolla. Mk2s had something the mk3s lack, a soul.
My mk2 had this and it was a blast. It had enough power that you could drive the car hard and still have a blast while not getting yourself into too much trouble nad they run on the smell of an oily rag. It was actually more fun to drive than the replacement (S3) because I have to baby the S3 if I don't want to go through a million litres of petrol or get in trouble with the fuzz.
Personally I'd upgrade suspension and brakes first anyway. Mk2s are build for the twisties.
