    Turbo the gti

    Hey guys,

Ive found a t3 flange turbo manifold and small t2 turbo for the mk2. All i would need now is a dump pipe and a spacer to drop the compression down. What do you guys think, is the digi2 up to it? Running 5-7 psi on a internally stock engine would be alright wouldnt it?

    Any info would be appreciated!

    Cheers, Stefan

... following this thread with interest. This is what i have been planning for my mark 2 with 250 000 kms, my family has got the tools and the know how!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5JXr7VOsWM this is what i would love to have ... however i know that alot of internal upgrades would have taken place.

im going to go with no, i recon it will die very quickly, either do it properly and rebuild the 8v or do a 1.8t, 16vt or vr6t conversion

Yeah but my engine is pretty much brand new, 130,000km and almost perfect compression. Im looking for a cheap conversion and can get all these parts fairly cheap...

    Cheers, Stefan

yer but a) it was never designed for it, your digipants ECU will prob through a hissy fit lean out and make your motor explode, and you got to think about the bigger picture,

    you need.

turbo Oil lines, coolant lines ( if coolant cooled)
    Intercooler
    Intercooler piping
    BOV
    Boost controller
    Various amount of silicone bends
etc etc the list goes on

plus you got to change the compression, may main concern is the digipants but its up to you i just think for the money that you will end spending you better off doing it non cheap and non ghetto. UP to you mate, don't let me stop you it's just my opinon.

maybe 3 or 4 pounds might be ok, 7 is very ambitious on a stock N/a digipant

To start with im all for turbo charging mk2's! mine flys but is built properly to be reliable with all the internal work done.

Compression wise your engine will be fine, the digi runs 9.0:1 compression standard which is fine for boost up to 14 psi with the CORRECT TUNING. The stock injection system will have to be replaced with an after market computer, dont even think of running low boost and it will be fine, it wont....

If you can do all the work yourself you will save thousands, i did with the exception of dyno tuning.

The T2 is to small for it, the top end would be restricted by its size, my Garrett GT 25/30r turbo boosts up at 2700 rpm with next to no lag at all. A GT25 or GT28 would be perfect for drivability and provide heaps of top end power.

How much power are you chasing? what is your budget?

Thanks for the reply, exactly the info i was looking for! What sort of aftermarket would i have to look at? I can get intercooler, the t2 with all lines for free so i would only need to get the pipes, turbo manifold. Would the t25 be more suited? I thought coz the 8V makes torque down low anyways the t2 would be adequate coy it would spool up down low... Im not chasing huge power, just a little extra, i wanna start of a bit cheaper and then start upgrading the turbo etc afterwards when funds allow.

    Thanks alot, Stefan

I would run at least a t25, it will boost very low down, coming on around 2000 to 2500rpm. I have just replaced my front mount intercooler with a water to air one so if your keen for an awesome intercooler with stainless pipes and bov attached PM me. Your injectors will run out of flow at even 10psi boost so if you chase to much power you will need to upgrade them. You can run an EMS, microtec, haltech computer... their are heaps of computer options depending on your budget. An EMS dual sport computer would be my pick on a tight budget. I run a full 3" exhaust but a 2 1/2" would be enough.

    Thanks for the reply mate
Ive been doing some research on some guys in germany that run stock ecu with g60 injectors and a FPR vacuumed in with the turbo... What do you think about that? Im not looking into getting a new ecu setup at the moment and would have to wait till funds allow as they are pretty dear.. I have also read that the callaway conversion in the US runs with stock ecu but they engage the lambda temperature sensor and add a fuel enrichment kit... I will PM you about the intercooler and piping too mate I already run a 2.5in cat-back exhaust so i think that should be sufficient

Let me know what you think!

    Thanks alot, Stefan

sounds like it would be a nice project! would love to see some progress of this when the ball gets rolling.

As TwinEng mentioned, It's all about correct tuning. As long as your mixtures and pressures are up to scratch, you should be fine!
