    Suspension Time

So im keen to get new suspension for the MkII but not really sure where to start.

Budget is anything less than 1k, the more the better but am keen for something comfortable but decent performance as it will be driven daily pretty soon.

I like the idea of coil overs for the sake of being able to adjust based on what size wheels i get etc but obviously for the price of a lower end set of coilovers you can get a decent cup kit...

    For example..

    Volkswagen Golf II 16v > Suspension > Suspension Kits > ES#1303466 Touring Cup Kit - 31015T-2

I know some of you guys have got some good ideas about this stuff so keen for some input. Wheels are also being changed, at this stage they will be 16x7's.

    Cheers,

    Simon

If you want comfort for daily driving, lowering springs/uprated dampers is the way to go. Coilovers are great for going low but you won't get a comfortable riding setup for less than $1,000.

Seeing as you are running 16's your offsets need to be spot on, around +35ish. If they are too high, for example my 16x7's have an offset of +42 and i can't go lower than half way down the available adjustment because the wheels hit the collars on the struts. On the other hand if your offset is to high won't be able to go too low without rubbing issues which means some arch work.

My coilovers are AP's imported from the UK, cost me around $750 landed and while the ride is ok it can be a bit bouncy over bigger bumps. But i want it to go really low (once my 15's arrive) so they are perfect for what i want.

Basically if you want to go really low and don't mind a bit of a bouncy ride go coilovers. If you want to just drop it a bit but keep it comfy for daily duties go for a cup kit (dampers/springs).

Either way it'll look a lot better with a bit of a drop.

yep completely agree with what you are saying, dumping it does look good but not really practical at this stage so the cup kit seems like best option.

Soooo....the H&R cup kit drops it 1.3" at the front and 1.25" at the back which inst that low but a nicer stance. Got my eye on some 16 x 7.5 et35s now which basically works out to 16mm less inner clearance and 22mm more poke on the out. Might look good but am thinking i might be scrubbing.

with the right tyre choice there shouldn't be too much issue with scrubbing. You maybe have to trim the flares very slightly to prevent a very rubs on really big bumps, but I think with a 195/45, you shouldn't have any major issue's, but still have a comfortable ride.

I run 16 inch et35 wheels with 195/45r16 tyres (might be 195/40r16) along with coil overs and there's no chance of me scrubbing the tyres and my car scrapes the front bumper pretty much every driveway I go into. I do live in the North shore of Sydney though and it's ridiculously hilly.
This is the only photo I have of it which isn't a great one for ride height but it gives you an idea of the tuck.

    16 x 7.

You won't get a whole lot more drop that that though thanks to the solid rear axle set up. Standard mk4 GTIs lift a wheel pulling into that driveway.
