Thread: Suspension dilemma

  1. #11

Yep, im a dumbass, they are 195/50/15, i dont want too sell the rims either as they do look nice, trying to make them work, almost too the point of ordering some hottuning jom or something like that adjustable coilovers. at least i can get the height too where i need it to be and anything would be a softer ride than what it is at the moment.

I you don't like the ride at the moment, DON'T BUY Hottuning/Jom coilovers the ride will be a lot harsher & more bouncy.

The solution to your problems is very easy. Stock shocks with lowering springs (or a spring/shock kit) & lower profile tyres.
For reference my wheels are 15x7 running 195/50 tyres and at this ride height they didn't rub.

I am running AP coilovers and the ride is ok but can be bouncy. Cheap coilovers are a massive compromise. Yes they give you ride height adjustment but they have to perform at the lowest settings so the spring rates are stiff set so the ride is harsh. If you are set on coilovers buy the best you can within your budget, but from what you are saying a kit like the H&R cup kit will be suit you best.

I second what walshy has said. I would never buy hottuning, not even for a joke. Have had the pleasure of riding in a few hottuning equiped vehicles......dangerous rice bounce.

PS. those rims look like a BMW fittment hence the offset of 25 or 20.

Nice Mk2, dude. I like the wheels.

Weitec Hicon GTs are a good bang-for-buck choice IMO. I've just fitted a set in my Mk1 GLD and the ride is firm, but definitely not bouncy around town and on the highway it's better than the standard stuff! Really impressed. They're internally identical to a KW V1, so i'm not surprised.

Hit me up if you'd like some more info.

I remember you saying something along the lines of "Seriously.. I'm not riding in the back again. I think i've damaged my spine.."

I think they are probably 195/5/15's (not 60's) as they dont look quite like they came off a falcon.

might be lowered like 30mm maybe. if you raise it back up, it'll be crap to drive, and you might still have to same issue (because of the increase in suspension travel...)

If any thing, go stiffer, that way the suspension wont travel as much and you wont rub. Or Roll you arches and trim your flares. Probably the easiest and cheapest solution really.

good day to you guys... yup! this is a 55 series its not a 60. try getting a 50 and also check the offset... hope this helps you

Why would raising and softening it to standard make it crap to drive???? Usually, people go backwards by fitting lowering springs and leaving the dampers as standard.

I agree that the extra travel of std springs could well cause the rubbing issue to persist - the offset needs to be addressed (can be done by changing the rim halves but would be expensive) or the tyres need to be narrowed.

mashman, why not contact a VW wrecker and ask about old MkII springs?

I'm referring to the uninspiring ride/handling of a stock car. Floating, un-direct etc etc.

A car with stiffened springs and standard dampers is worse - less roll, more direct response but worse in EVERY other way.

If you accept that a stock car will settle into a bend and lean (and float a bit over rises) you can drive them very fast - try hustling along in a rental sometime. Once the suspension is loaded by cornering forces, they usually feel very stable through bumps etc while a stiffened car with stock dampers will tend to bounce, wander and skip.

Just fitted a new set of stock springs from GAP, to go with the KYB dampers that were in the car, The ride has improved dramatically with no hint of scrubbing occuring through spoon drains etc. There is a small, and i mean minute increase in body roll, but ill take that over riding on what can only be described as almost no suspension, yes it looked cool, and im all for that if it still works properly this didnt. the shocks were all good and the springs are still settling down. I took the chance to but all the hoses and bits and pieces i needed from GAP at the same time as most of the frieght was for the springs (was 360US just for springs delivered in 6 days via UPS) and all the other gear added 15US in freight.

These are the H and R springs i took out, the front is the same measurements as the stock replacement with one less coil giving you a stiffer lower spring (same as cutting a coil on the standard spring) the rear had more coils but is wound in a progressive way but the tighter coils were bound up all the time affectively giving me a very short stiff spring. as soon as the admin will allow me i will put them in the for sale section, i have asked them to wave the 90day wait, we will see?
