Just back to a previous post i wasnt talking about your car, the Polo G40 , G60 Rallye Golf and Corrado were purpose built. And as you have noticed with the response its pie in the sky unless you have PLENTY of money.
Cheers

Sounds like the ABF would be the most viable option in this case, the same power as a standard mk4 GTI 155hp
In regards to the ECU there are some new Megasquirt units including the harness going very cheap on Ebay UK.
I know that sounds to good to be true but worth while investigating

If anyone has some knowledge on the above, please share.
ABF would be the way i would go too if you had a good one available with subframe wiring the lot. Last conversion i did and i goes back let me tell you was an 85 Golf2 with K jet, swapped it over to a KR 16v with the lot. Was good fun. The ABF has more get up though and that would be the way i would go if you want more than what the PB or the RV is going to give you otherwise DIG DEEP

Hmm, i might come to watch too. Except the view will be blurry and limited... as i will be seeing you in my MIRRORS AAARRHHHHAAAHAAAHAAAAAAAA
Oh wait my car isn't even finished
...Aaaaaaannnnyway, i reckon some intake/exhaust work, a cam and maybe a 1.9 or 2.0 if you can be arsed and you will be happy. Even just putting an LSD in will make it feel better as all the power you have will be properly put down (even if its 130bhp it makes a difference). You should be able to get 150bhp for a good sum right?? That's enough for a laugh.
I agree that a gazillion bhp isn't always the way to go. My mk2 should make about 270bhp and its actually costing me a lot of headaches in the sense that so much power has to still be tractable and driveable. LSD, sway bars, coilovers, wide enough rubber but not so much that its a torque steer festival, etc etc. Not to mention driving in the rain
Get the Vr6 if you wanna spend another gazillion, and ruin the balance and feel of the chassis in the process. Plus you'll need truck brakes to stop the whale of a thing There is that tits sound tho...
Supercharger would be great to see tho, as it's pretty uncommon, but theres probly better options??

Just cleaned this thread up, all off topic posted moved to the 16v humour thread.
Lets get some info in this thread for the op.
76 MkI 3 door - daily drive/project - 1.8 5speed
76 MkI 3 door swallowtail - 16v track car
76 MkI 3 door "long term" project
honestly, for reliable power/fun, go for a 2.0 16v with mild work. you'd be looking at something like 150 - 160hp (flywheel) and it'd go hard without costing you buttloads to fit, tune and maintain.
for example. :
$1500 - 2000 to buy the motor
$800 - 1500 to rebuild head with porting
$600 cams
= nice and fast
