Speakers in the front of my mk2 advice

I'm running a Sony 10 stacker in my Mk2 with 6x9 3 ways in the parcel shelf, but they aren't cutting it at all. The head unit is fine though. I'm thinking about installing splits in the front with the drivers in the doors (where the pull out drawer things are) and the tweeters in the dash (where the old small factory speakers are). Has anyone done this? I can't see why it wouldn't work, but I thought some of you may know....

I'm not really interested in putting in a sub, and I don't really want to put an amp in either, but I will if I have to in order to get a decent sound.

you can actually get a speaker ring that replaces the pull out thing in the door pocket. from memory i think the largest you can fit in that is 5-1/4".

this would be a good upgrade. however, it wont be perfect because the door pocket is made of plastic. which isnt the best thing for mounting speakers on because it will rattle and it isnt real strong. your also limited to a 5-1/4" which wont have much bass. the step up from there would be to fit some door pods, which is what i've done. my splits are 6.5". ill get a picture if you like.

I have installed many stereos in cars (never a mk2). I would highly recommend buying splits of Ebay. They can be had for well under $100 and will sound excellent running off the head unit.

With splits and 6x9 it will be a HUGE improvement... If your after something extra (thats not to expensive) I would reccomend a 10" sub and amp.. but thats for another thread.

I have pioneer splits front and rear (oem places) with an amp and 12" Cerwin Vega sub. Sounds great but the sub is barely breaking a sweat so seperate tweeters and mids are the way to go imo although unless it's super loud it sounds awesome!

Speaker Grilles like that could be got from ebay.co.uk and would save cutting up your doors.

Thanks very much for your help guys. I'm glad I asked, I was looking at some Pioneer splits at JB for $300... I'll have to get onto E-bay and have a look. The Jaycar splits sound good as well. The 6.5" speakers wont fit those ring inserts though, will they?

Hmmm... door pods you say? Do they look like this?

And the tweeters go in the old speaker spots in the dash without any drama?
