so what mods should I do?

    hello,
think that I have just bought a 91 gti,
its on ok nick few wee problems here and there but nothing major, so want it to go, handle and stop a bit better, with the odd track day and possible hillclimb thrown in. But the cars main job would be our road car. I want to keep it on the stock 14" wheels to keep as plain looking as possible.
have a max budget of 6k (maybe a wee bit more) to get the car sorted so was thinking thus:

    suspension:
    polybush whever possible,
koni sport shocks externaly adjustable ones
    springs? what do people recomend?
rear sway bar, who makes them for the mk2?
    strut brace for towers.

    engine:
    2ltr bottom end
polished, ported head with bigger valves, who can do this in sydney?
also thinking about running it on big carbs, if not just for the noise!
    hot rally cam
    decent extactors and exhaust.

    front brakes,
    slotted rotors
    ebc pads
    braided hoses?

    what do people think?

Poly bushes, koni, eibach(inc anti roll bars) strut braces from whoever. All good ideas. Look at Weitec for a suspension kit too.

Keep the injection, if carbs were any good they'd use them in F1., don't go 2 litre, they don't rev as well as the 18-1900, have the original taken out to 1900, big valves is good, no to the rally cam, 285 is lumpy enough. Manifold and system good.

Front brakes, swap for Passat 256mm ones, braided hoses are good. EBC pads are ok too.

    what do people think?
All my comments are from personal experience and not just following the crowd.

The 16V goes well but putting one into an 8V in Australia isn't 100% straightforward. You need to swap the 8V fuel pump for a 16V one or it won't run properly. In the UK where you can buy a full 16V Golf or Jetta for a 100
    quid it makes real sense.

They way to do that is with a full donor vehicle and the only one you might find would be a Passat with a 9A.

    There are other snags too.

I'd start off with a head job and go from there.

The Aussie cars have a restrictive exhaust manifold and downpipe, bin that and replace with a UK spec item.

I have these bits and many others besides at my workshop. I can also hook you up with a good headjob

Congrats on your purchase, nice to see another Pom on here.
