It also depends where you are gonna live. I live in QLD and there are very few cars to be found up here. There have been 2 Gti's for sale in the two and a half years i've lived here, both were 5 doors. It's not such a problem in the southern states.
If you can, bring it over.
Just make sure you get import approval from Australian Dept of Transport BEFORE you ship it out. You shouldn't have any trouble qualifying if the car is pre 1989 or you've owned it for 12 months in UK AND lived there for the whole 12 months. Also be careful about packing your stuff in the car as if you don't get import approval customs can't open the car and therefore can't let you get your gear out. There's a few things you need to know but just contact Dept of Transport and Customs and they should be able to tell you all you need to know.
