    Shift linkage adjustment.

    I need a bit of instructional help.

    When my new 'box was fitted the gear selection was messed up.

    The problem is that 1st is hard to get in to as is 2nd, 3rd is easy, 4th will jump out if u dont fully release the clutch and 5th you have to push hard to the right before you push it up. Its doesnt feel broken or anything its just tough to shift.

    Dad and Carl have told me it can be adjusted. Since Dad is always at work he cant show me and google didnt help.

    Can some one tell me what needs to be adjusted, a pic or diagram would help.

    i had the same trouble recently...

    i have a mk1 but i asume they are the same under there.

    underneath where the shifter i (under the car) there will be a boot...you must remove this so you can see a foot like shape and a box section.

    the foot moves around when selecting gears.

    where the linkages connect to the chassis there will be a hose clamp type clip with a 13mm nut you need to undo this. then find a match box or measure 15,, out between the box under the shifter and the end of the foot.

    then tighten up the clamp and check it... undo the clamp and swivle the foot until it selects all the gears nicley. (may take a lil while).

    You need to loosen the main shift rod(the one that runs along the exhaust from the shifter) infront of the big nylon bearing/bush Then slide the rod forward slightly & re tighten the clamp
    When you push the rod forward it makes 2 & 4 gears easier to pick up & visa versa if you slide it backwards

    I instaled a weightend shifter rod this morning. It has improved the shifts but you can still feel the first is a bit tough to slot in, 2nd isnt as tough but you can still feel it, doesnt glide in and 5th is still a bit of a mission but has improved.

    I dont have a axle stand atm so i dont want to get under the car without one.

    All you need is a 13mm spanner mate.

    Put the car in first gear.

    Loosen the 13mm nut on the rod down by the steering rack.
    Peel back the gearshift gaiter inside the car and move the stick would be in the optimum place for 1st gear. Get a helper to hold it steady and do up the 13mm nut tight.

    All should now be well. If you cant get 5th, you need to move it over a bit more.

    hmm i seem to have a similer problem on my vr instead its only my 2nd gear it somtimes tricks me into thinking its in gear but its slightly out and of coarse wen i let off the clutch it makes a horrible crunch pls dont accuse me of my driving skillz cause it happens to anyone who drives it (sorry for hijack)

    Different prob on the Vr6 mate. Thats an engine mt, or a crunchy gearbox.

    On the Mk2 its usually linkages.
    One of the linkage rods probably popped out on your car Robin.
