    RV 1.8 timing problem

well guys i spent friday and sat putting an rv in the mk1, and i have a problem now - i cant get the cam timing right.

its an otherwise standard rv block and head, running a g-grind cam and i am unsure as to what i need to line up with what to get the thing timed properly, because i dont have a manual that covers the RV engine.

    any help?

    cheers

You seem to know your way around an engine but when I timed mine I just set the mark in the cam pulley to the mark at the front of the head.

Then there is a tiny notch in the crank pulley, it's hard to see, so i marked it with liquid paper and you set the block to TDC.

Do you have a tool for the tensioner pulley?

Sorry if you know all this. I had the Bentley Manual on my PC but lost it to a virus

All i can really say is turn everything back to TDC and try again.

the marker on the cam pulley should line up at the bottom of the nearest cam cover nut

ahh thats what i was after! i didnt know where to line the mark on the cam pulley up with - whether it was the head-deck, or the cover, or what.

    thanks guys!

these may help you to run it perfectly according to vw original timing.

inlet valve open OT 3degrees after
inlet valve close UT4 3 degrees after
outlet valve open UT 37 degrees before
outlet valve close OT 3 degrees before

There are a couple of marks on the top pulley mate. The one that lines up with the top of the head is on the inside of the pulley

Correcto moondo Loon!!!! and the one on the outside for a sanity check will be pointing at 7 o clock. Look all else fails zip the cam cover off and make sure the lobes are both pointing up, then your are on the fire stroke mate, I use the notch on the flywheel instead of the crank pulley too. Much easier. I have a trick for the dizzy too, before you take off the belt all lined up on number one, mark the aux pulley with the block then when the belt is off turn it back a tooth. When you fit the belt and tension guess what the notch lines up again and no need to adjust the dizzy AT ALL.

    ahh fixed it.

i pretty much guessed all that stuff before guys, thanks for the confirmations. i was having self doubts because i couldnt get the damned thing to start/run. turned out the switch power wire for the thermo fan was earthing out behind the passenger side headlight and draining power, so i had very little/weak spark - no starty . once i found the wire, all my problems went away

for anyone thats interested, a DHLA 45mm carb on an RV 1.8 witha g-grind in a mk1 = MUCH FUN
