    rattly startup

Hi, got a mark2 GTI with 8v petrol 149000km on it, when started after sitting a while its rattly for a few minutes until the oil pres builds, is this normal for this engine or is there a fix, The previous owner had let the oil level get low, car runs beautiful with no weird noises (changed gearbox to ATF to get rid of the crunch 1st to 2nd at revs) have changed all the hoses now aswell as the dist cap and rotor, obviously changed oil and filter (ryco). Also found original books in the hidy hole under the steering column after getting a set on Fleabay (spewin) Any ideas appreciated. Car was the silver one sold from the for sale section about 4/5 months ago in SA.

    Cheers

PS i have a spare set of books!

    Hey mashman,

What weight oil do you have in it now?
I've had this problem for a while (even with a reco'd head) but after going back to an OEM oil filter (Mann, Hengst, Mahle ect) it seems to have died down.

Next step for me is to take the sump off an check the oil strainer for debris.

EDIT: Does your car have an aggressive cam?

put in 15w40 castrol gtx, which is OK with book spec. Have heard a slight tick sometimes when cruising which then dissappears. Car im told has more aggressive cam than stock and has a slightly lumpy idle. May try an oil flush and see how it goes after. Noticed that it only happens after car has sat so maybe oil draining back when it shouldnt.

They rattle for a few seconds ( not mins ) if the lifters are a bit sick. Mine will have a little rattle for around 2-3 sec if it hasn't been started for a while. Just enough time for the lifter to fill up with oil. But if we are talking Minutes.... You have issues. New oil wont fix it..(unless it has none in it when it rattles).

cheers, guys, looks like lifter birthday time, have rebuilt lifters before on old race car on a budget, will have a look in book and see how much time to remove and replace if it take too much time to remove (time constraints). also have a sump gasket that i got from GAP earlier with other parts so will clean out aswell. it does only rattle for about 5 seconds or so (overatated at minutes) but the occasional rattle when warm and running is enough i will sort it out. Thanks for all the ideas and the link.
