You aren`t allowed to tow with a rope, but a cable, or rigid bar is ok.

You could use a lngth of scaffold or similay pole and two d shackles.

Me and a mate towed a car like that from Merther to Swansea down the head of the valleys road once. great fun!

Is this the Girls one with the blown motor?

This will put paid to importing your Cab I reckon mate.

My trailer's getting registered on that very day at 4:15 but I don't actually have a car to tow it (laden) with.

I can tow it empty behind the MK1 but it would be illegal to (and stupid) to tow a car on it. I'm going to take it to the RTA with the Golf just to reg it. For racing weekends away I'll just hire a car, it's actually cheaper to hire a car than a trailer!

You can legally flat tow an unregistered car behind a registered car in Vic. This is from the VicRoads website. http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/...redVehicle.htm

    Tow behind a registered vehicle
You can tow the unregistered vehicle behind a registered vehicle. Road Rules Victoria 1999 (no. 295) apply when towing. They are:
    • you must safely control the towed vehicle (you can be on a probationary licence)
    • the brakes on the towed vehicle must be working when you are using rope, chain or wire
    • the maximum space between the vehicles is 4 metres (if either vehicle is a motor cycle, the maximum is 2.5 metres)
    • you must display a flag (minimum 30cm square) attached to the rope, chain or wire.
For a short trip consider using a tow truck instead of hiring a trailer it's often the same price and a lot less hassle. For a 1/2 hour trip from Dandenong to Boronia I paid $100 to move a Passat for example. Sometimes you can get a towie between jobs who'll offer a cash discount too.
