    vernier?

Where can i get a chip from? Im guessing an ebay chip wont do.
You don't have to change cylinders, but you do have to change pistons which can be expensive.

A vernier is an adjustable cam gear that you can use to change your cam timing to give you more power for the track or more low down for the road.

I would never get a chio from ebay, it won't be suited to the modifications of your car, I'd only go with a brand that has a long and close association with VW's or standalone management which is alot more expensive again.

It's best to really think about what you want more, you could do a 2L bottom end, extractors, exhaust, chip and some head work and you'd have a torquey rocket with about 130hp. It might not seem like that much more power but it would fly compared to standard.

If you want a race motor and are chasing power it'll cost you heaps and reliability will be an issue.

On the other hand you could as many have said get a 2L 16v which has 150hp out of the box. A few extras on that and you're looking at 170-180hp no probs.

See it's easy to add about 15-35hp(ofcourse depending on the type of motor) to most motors with a little bit of work. More then that and you need to consider carefully what you want and what will get you there the most efficiently. In some cases an engine change will be far cheaper than buiding a race spec 8v, it just depends on what you want.

The only thing thats better about the ABF over the 9a (both 2l 16v's for people who don't know) is that generally they're newer (out of newer vehicles, not a newer design) and they have slightly better ports nothing a mild porting wouldn't fix and wilder cams than the 9a. Otherwise it's debatable as the 9a is a bubble block with a shorter stroke and can rev harder(when given the cams) and better than the long stroke ABF.

heaps more work for one , they only just fit in and i'm of the opinion they are to heavy for a mk2. Would just understeer heaps i reckon.

Id love a vr6 in my mk2. Dunno why...probly because of the sound and the 2 extra cylinders

An ABF would also be great.

Main problem is money....damn money, thats why i thought it would be better just to squeeze a bit more power out of the 8v. I was disapointed to find out the aussie mk2 is only 77kw. Id be happy with a full exhaust, cams and modding the air intake untill i can get sorted and one day do a vr6.

Ive heard from many that the mk3 2l doesnt rev well. Why is that?

Guy I bought my eibach sways from in the UK went from a std 16v (139hp) to a (different car) TSR big 8 valve (140+ hp) and reckoned it was nowhere near as good. Coming from an 8v that made nearly 100hp at the treads I'd agree!

Infact I've only seen one mental 8v and the guy had spent $10K on the engine. Was good though

    its all swings and roundabouts...
Back home in the UK there is a massive war which is 8v v 16v when it come to chosing an engine.
As its already been said jumping to a std 16v (kr/abf/9a) would give you more bhp per $ u spend.
I am a pure 16v guy at heart, but a well tune 8v will give a 16v a dam good run for there money.

The basic trend in the UK is 2.0 16v (mainly k-jets in mk1 and mk2's) but 160bhp+ can be made out of a kr 1.8 unit but you get more low down torque with the 2.0.
a audi 9a bottom end with a kr head running on k-jet will give you 150bhp+ easy and all day long.

now ive been reading on here that there isnt many kr 16v here in oz...ever thought about getting some imported as you can buy a whole 1.8 16v engine back in the uk for under $200

for 2.0 16v tune look on the ClubGTI forum www.clubgti.com/forum and there is a 2.0 16v tuning guide on there as most people run 2.0 16v's as track cars
